How to Read Your Propane Tank Gauge

Your propane tank gauge shows the approximate percentage of fuel remaining in your tank. The gauge reads in percentages, not gallons. Use the chart below to determine how much fuel is in your tank.

Remember: Tank gauges can occasionally stick. If your appliances aren't working but the gauge shows fuel, tap the gauge and open and close the tank lid firmly. If it doesn't move, call us for service.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How much gas is left in my tank?

Check your tank gauge to see the percentage remaining. Use our tank chart above to convert the percentage to approximate gallons based on your tank size. For example, a 500-gallon tank at 30% contains about 150 gallons.

  • How deep does my gas line need to be buried?

Your propane gas line must be buried a minimum of 18 inches deep to meet safety codes and protect the line from damage.

  • How close to my house can my propane tank be?

    Safety regulations require:

    • Tanks 250 gallons and smaller: minimum 10 feet from your home
    • Tanks larger than 250 gallons: minimum 25 feet from your home

These distances ensure safety and proper ventilation around your tank.

  • My gauge says I have gas but my appliances aren't working. What should I do?

First, tap on the gauge and then open and close the tank lid firmly to ensure the gauge isn't stuck. If the gauge doesn't move or your appliances still don't work, there may be an issue with your regulator or pigtail connection.
